She was ruined as a character in Soul Calibur IV. I'm not talking about her outfit, either.

She made a decision that defied every instinct in her body, every mandate in her mind, something that she would NEVER actually do: She chose to protect Soul Edge.

To protect her children. Right.

Here's an excerpt from my in-production Soul Calibur IV fic, where Sophitia is confronted by the Archangel Raziel:

Quote:
Raziel slapped Sophitia across the face.

"HOW COULD YOU?!" He shouted, "How could you be any more selfish?! You hold your own children's short term safety above the well being of mankind! It's no small wonder your gods abandoned you. YOU abandoned THEM! They told you to destroy this thing, and you do exactly the opposite. Why? Because of the short term danger of one small child. The way I see things, that's illogical, and while touching in a way, completely wrong."

Sophitia tried to say something, but was cut off by Raziel.

"Did you bother to think things through?" Raziel continued, "Maybe if you DESTROYED THE SOURCE of the evil infecting your child, that the curse might be lifted? You may be thankful that Algol GAVE HIS LIFE to save your children, elseways your gods would have punished you by taking your children from you. Not only were you willing to protect Soul Edge to save them, you were also willing to put the souls of all mankind at stake to do it."

"THAT'S NOT TRUE!" Sophitia cried, tears streaming down her cheeks from sorrow-filled eyes, "I had no choice!"

"...Everyone ALWAYS has a choice." Raziel replied, "You had a choice. You could have risked your life, and that of your children to save the human race, but you chose the easier path and protected the very evil that threatened you and your family on the off chance that the crooked words of a satan were telling the truth. In the end, the brave warrior of hope and light turned out to be a miserable little coward."

Yeah. That's about how I feel. So, I'm writing a fanfic about it. Maybe I'll post it when I'm done.

Discuss.

I think the decision was very stupid. It can pretty much be summed up like this:

Save the world, or a measly child. Which would you choose?

No offense, But I like what I wrote better. It's COOL YO!

Also, as Spock said, "Were I to quote logic, it would say that 'The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few'."

Okay. I understand why you guys have that opinion, but speaking as a mother myself (and a psychologist), people don't always make the best choices when under stress. Sophitia witnessed her child in a horrible state, and it put her under a terrible amount of stress as well. She made a snap judgement that was born of an instinctual reaction as a mother: she had to protect her child. In that moment, instinct won over reason, and she found herself trying to dig herself out of a hole she created. Granted, she could have tried to kill Tira, but her opponent was a skilled fighter, and even if she did kill Tira, that would not cure little Pyrrha, plus, that would drive her over the edge as Sophitia has NEVER killed anyone, no matter how evil they were. She doesn't have the will to take a life.

Out of all the characters in Soul Calibur IV, Sophitia is the most realistically portrayed as far as her motivations go.

So, while I think your arguments are indeed sound, I beg you to consider the reasons she may have chosen that path. She's a heroine at heart, no matter what she's chosen.

You have smote my unworthy arguement. I bow before a superior intellect.

Clearly TCA didn't want to not like Sophitia, as he rejects his arguement the minute someone opposes it.

I sympathize. I don't want to not like her either.

Duh. She used to be my favorite. And now Cassandra has a slight edge over her older sister.

This.

It takes a lot of guts to do what she chose to do. That made her more of a cooler character in my eyes.

She's come a long way since her initial portrayal in Soul Blade. She's not any weaker because she caved at the last minute.
