Okay. I haven't owned the game for very long, but I've beaten both modes as all 4 playable characters, so I think I have enought experience to form an established opinion.
Back when it was first released, I criticized it for the anime artwork. I have since found the anime to be a mixed bag. The Three Stooges are HORRIBLY rendered (befitting their characters), but I prefer the look of certain characters, like Arikado and Yoko, to their Kojima interpretations. I am sorry to say that in Aria, I couldn't see any resemblance to Alucard in Genya; he looked WAY too girlish (even for an Ayami character), and Yoko looked like like my mom with longer hair (VERY scary thought!). In Dawn, I feel that Arikado's look was handled better, by using Kojima's art as a springboard to finally get that perfect blend of "man-prettiness" to make his design better. Yoko was rendered nicely, except her "snob" face. You know the one I mean. Soma is so-so, but he finally gets some skin pigmentation, which is nice. Also, Cvfan13 should pick Mina as his next stalking target. She's pretty cute in Dawn. On the subject of art, all I have left to say is is three words:
DMITRII'S CONSTIPATION FACE.
The graphics are GORGEOUS, and that is all I have to say on that subject.
The level design is suprisingly good. My favorite areas are the Lost Village, Dark Chapel, Condemned Tower (I'll explain why later), and the Silenced Ruins (It's one giant reference to the original Castlevania in terms of artistic style, color, and layout. Even the cruddy, ratty wallpaper fits!)
The music was great, but Echoes of Darkness would have fitted the Subterranean Hell better than the theme that was ultimately applied; it's a great ambient piece that would have gone well with the dark, subdued visuals of the stage.
The boss fights were EXCELLENT through and through, and the free fall battle portion of the fight with Gergoth will forever remain etched in my memory. That moment won me over and made me a believer. The Bat Company and Puppetmaster battles were also epic, but I have to say that the old schoolish Somacula battle from Julius mode was the absolute best battle in the game. No question.
After beating this game, I figured out why X-play gave it a 5 out of 5. It's an AWESOME game, and I was an idiot to bash it by being a stupid sheep/parrot/creature that imitates and follows.
And before I go, I must reiterate:
DMITRII'S CONSTIPATION FACE!! _________________ Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget about the one's who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Main game was so-so, best part of the game was the abaddon boss fight.
Julius Mode made this worth playing alone. |

Dawn was plain Horrible. It was no better than PoR. _________________ "It is often stated that we must weigh the potential benefits and risks before we do something perceived as risky. Of course we must, but it is mathematically impossible to solve one equation with two unknowns. In the end, it all comes down to common sense, which varies among all of mankind, and is never foolproof. Let it be no other way, and let us rejoice for those who are brave and boldly step out into an uncertain future and let us pity, comfort, and then gently nudge in the right direction those who lack the bravery or ability to do so by themselves."

Dawn kicked ass gameplay wise, but the story was only so-so, and much of the art was bad. Still, the portrait of Yoko where she's smiling isn't that bad. _________________ I am a warrior. Of such great powers or beings there may be conceivably a survival... a survival of a hugely remote period when... consciousness was manifested, perhaps, in shapes and forms long since withdrawn before the tide of advancing humanity... forms of which poetry and legend alone have caught a flying memory and called them gods, monsters, mythical beings of all sorts and kinds...

| The game is much better when you skip all of the dialogue and think of the story in a Castlevania(1) manner. |

I actually found the story to be decent. It's not great, but it's okay. _________________ Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right.
